A new fundraising campaign has been launched to support and enhance Diabetic Eye Screening services across the region, helping to protect the sight and health of patients living with diabetes.

The campaign aims to raise funds for additional equipment, patient education materials, and improved facilities to support the County Durham and Darlington Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, which plays a vital role in early detection and prevention of diabetic retinopathy — a leading cause of sight loss.

Each year, the programme screens thousands of people with diabetes to detect early changes in the retina. Early diagnosis through screening is crucial to preventing avoidable blindness and supporting long-term eye health.

“Diabetic eye screening can save sight — but many people don’t realise how important it is,” said Angela Ellis, Programme Manager.

“With extra funding, we can improve patient experience, raise awareness, and invest in tools that help us do even more.”

The fundraising initiative will include community events, staff challenges, and local business engagement, with every donation helping to support the people behind this essential service.

Patients who have benefited from early detection through the screening programme have also pledged their support, sharing stories of how regular screening helped them avoid severe vision loss.

“The screening team spotted changes before I noticed anything,” said Sharon Grieve a local resident with diabetes.

“I’m so grateful — it gave me the chance to take action and protect my sight.”

The charity encourages individuals, community groups, and organisations to get involved by donating, organising fundraising events, or simply helping raise awareness.
