Maureen, who started work in 1958 age 16 worked in the Cardio Unit before working as an Occupational Health Senior Nursing Officer until she retired. Ivy, wanted to give something back to the local people so decided to volunteer at the Hospital Shop. Both now residents at Greenways Court Care Home, enjoyed a trip down memory lane as they toured the hospital and reminisced about their years of service caring for patients in the local community.
The visit was made possible thanks to the team at Greenways Court, who kindly arranged and accompanied the trip. Their support meant the nurses were able to reconnect with a place that held so many fond memories.
Sharon Buttle, Ward 2 Sister said: “It was such a pleasure to welcome our former nurses back to Shotley Bridge Hospital. Their visit was a wonderful reminder of the history and dedication that has shaped our hospital over the years.
“They were amazed at how much things have changed, and we were equally grateful to hear their stories and see their pride in the progress we’ve made."

Their dedication to patients during their careers helped shape the values we continue to uphold today. We are extremely grateful to Greenways Court Care Home for arranging such a special day."
The visit highlighted the deep ties between the hospital and its staff, past and present, and was a moving reminder of the legacy of care that continues at Shotley Bridge.
